Dear friends,

Thanks so very much for continuing to pray for "River", his family, and the other believers in Turkmenistan! I've been praying every day that God will overturn the adversaries of the Gospel and overturn their plans. I've been asking God to reveal in this situation that He alone is the true and living God (as in, "I am God and there is none else, and my glory I will not give to another").

Tim called from Istanbul tonight, and I've been just about jumping up and down with excitement and delight in our God! It was a brief but exciting call, in which he related these events which he recounted in an email sent just minutes ago. I'll let his email tell you how God is working:

When God’s children pray, the very gates of hell are shaken and we can and do have a major role in this massive spiritual battle that is being waged on the battlefield of this earth! I just received word about the aftermath of River. The principle of the school in the neighboring village was trying to wreak havoc after he heard about the arrests. This man stated in a public meeting that the region should be infuriated at River and that they should persecute him at every chance they had. He further stated that River should be murdered and the students should be beaten, persecuted and thrown out of school. The very next day this man had a heart attack and died. All were shocked as he was in good health.

However the day after this, the vice principle of the school in River’s village made a call to honor the words of the man who had died. She too called out for great persecution to crush the Christians, to murder River and to beat and throw the girls out of school. The next day she too had a massive heart attack. She is still in intensive care! With these developments, the entire region has been swept with an awesome fear of the God of River. No one dares to speak out against him or against His God. Right now even the Police are afraid to come and question the others about the events of that day.

“If God be for us, who can be against us?” Rom. 8:31. Please continue to be in prayer for this situation as God’s name receives the praise. Pray that many will come to Him through these events. Also please continue to pray for the girl whose father is a mullah. He is a very cruel man, she was tied up and locked in her room, and still we have no word on her condition.

I surely hope that our expressed gratitude and praise are at least as abundant and fervent as our entreaties have been! What a demonstration that "the Lord is on my side; I will not fear, what can man do unto me?"

My dear Family & Friends –
I am writing this note to ask for your prayers and to convey some news most of you are already aware of. Those who are close to me know that my marriage of 25-years to Annette has been recently ended. Those of you who have been through it know how agonizing it is, especially if that struggle involves children and a close family like ours.

For those who value the honesty in my life, I want you to know what has happened and also to know that I am open about it and pray that the God of redemption will help me pick up the pieces and weave them into the tapestry of His will.

We all realize there will be consequences for our decisions, but I am seeking the Lord for grace and mercy and likewise the same of the body of Christ.

This has been a hard and painful process – for all of us. Your prayers on our behalf are much appreciated. May God’s sovereignty be made manifest somehow in this situation.

What an amazing and extraordinary two weeks it’s been. I’m a 12 month employee at the school so I typically work through the summer. It’s our busiest time because it’s the time we clean up the computers/servers, order new equipment and do general maintenance. I take maybe one week off for vacation but I never take two consecutive weeks in a row.

For the last 6 years I’ve gone to Mexico City over Labor Day weekend to serve the poor with a group from our church. This year one of the doctors asked me to consider going to Honduras. He heads up another mission trip every June with a group of mostly High School students. They minister to the poor with medical, eye glass, pharmaceutical clinics, a hair cutting ministry and a children’s ministry.

I was a little hesitant at first. All the mission trips I’ve taken have been with adults and I wasn’t quite sure how I’d do with 19 High School students. Even though I see most of these kids in school every day I wasn’t quite sure how I’d relate to them or them to me.

The thing that intrigued me the most was the ruggedness of the trip. Bob, my doctor friend, had said the places they visit are way up in the mountains and the only way to get there was on the back of small bed, 4 wheel drive pickup trucks. Many of the families have no running water or electricity. I decided to take him up on his offer and I'm so glad I did.

Three weeks ago 27 of us drove to Miami and flew into San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

I'm told Honduras is the second poorest country in the world only above Haiti. It is a beautiful country.

Every day we would climb aboard 4 wheel drive pickup trucks and drive up the side of a mountain. We would set up various medical stations for a makeshift clinic in the local school building. We had a station for taking vital statistics like blood pressure and patient age, one for the medical doctor, one for the eye glass doctor, one for de-worming medication (don't ask) and a pharmacy. I was set up at the end of the pharmacy translating for those handing out the medication.

We also had a hair cutting ministry.

And a children's ministry.

Mid week we were able to take a few hours and visit the Pulhapanzak Waterfall near the town of San Buenaventura. It drops 140 feet (Niagara Falls is 170) . We hired a guide to take us down to the bottom of the falls and the noise was deafening. We got soaked to the bone. It was like walking through a typhoon as we made our way through chest-deep water to the back of the falls. We were finally able to catch our breath behind the sheets of water in a small cave behind the falls. After a few minutes, we went back out, jumped off a small cliff and swam in a pool at the foot of the falls. It was an amazing experience.

The day after I got back my honey and I headed up to the outer banks of North Carolina for a family reunion. What a contrast ;-)

We rented a 10 bedroom beach house for about 27 of us.

We had a great time.

Now it's back to work :-(

Tonight, Jordan Daniel Rolon and 980 of his closest friends graduated from our Alma Mater with proud parents Jimmy & Iris, role model / big brother Jacob, tearful grandmother Patria and proud, role model, tearful uncle Tom cheering in the stands. Jordan will be attending Penn State in a couple short weeks and after that, the world as we know it, may never be the same.

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways… yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of 40, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 5 cents!
Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!
There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOD !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-finks!

And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores!

And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!

See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or any time before!

The end of a great era!

#5 was a class act all the way. He made football fun. He was great for the team. He was great for the city. He was a proven winner. He was (and in my book) - will always be “Da Man!”. I know many, many people who became football and Eagles fan just because his fun spirit on the field was contagious. It was hard NOT to root for him.

The Eagles (and the city of Philadelphia) will miss him greatly.
I guess I understand the move but as a diehard fan--- this one shocked and rocked me. Especially to the rivalry Redskins.

When I think of Kevin Kolb, I think of A.J. Feeley. A guy who had a great couple of games but not the “real deal” to take us all the way.

Here’s hoping he proves me wrong…………

We saw this movie a few weeks ago.
Crazy Heart is a movie about a down and out, alcoholic, once famous, Country singer.
He's played by one of my favorite actors Jeff Bridges

Like I’ve said before, I’m not a big Country music guy but I fell in love with the soundtrack right away. Old time country they call it.
I came home and picked it up on my guitar in 5 minutes.
Great song sung by a great voice, Ryan Bingham.
The song won an Academy Award on Sunday and Jeff Bridges went home with an Oscar for Best Actor.

Bike Week 2010

Last year I went with Miriam. This year I went alone.
The best part of going to Bike Week, besides getting to see cool looking bikes, is watching the people that go. I stood on a corner for an hour just watching everyone go by.
Most of the people are guys my age with graying or losing hair.
I fit right in.

The weather was a little chilly (for Florida) in the morning.
Once it warmed up to 68, it turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day .

I did notice more three wheelers this year.
I guess we're losing our balance :-)

Wow. Twenty-five years. I remember being at my girlfriend’s house when Entertainment Tonight announced that they would be airing the original for the first time on national television. Her sisters, some ten years younger than me, kept asking “who’s that?” as Bob Dylan, Al Jarreau and others unknown to their generation appeared on the screen. Now, twenty-five years later, I’m watching today’s music superstars and asking myself “who’s that?”

Like the original airing the “who” is not nearly as important as the “why”. Artist unselfishly giving of their time and talent for a greater cause. Part of me tried to be cynical and criticize the solo choices and wardrobe decisions but at the end I realized that I am in no position to judge their motives. I simply pray that in the end, the right people benefit. God bless the people of Haiti and anyone trying to help them.

Ryan has been excelling in Track for North Penn High School. Yesterday he had a meet and he placed first in the long jump, 20'-5 3/4". He recently received a letter from Ithica College in New York about a possible Track scholarship when he graduates. He is still a junior. So proud of all his accomplishments so far. His coach says that there will be more letters from colleges if he keeps up the hard work. Please keep him in your prayers.

We continue to be a blessed family.

Rosi & Lito continue to make us proud as they raise their beautiful, Thalia in New York.
Rosi is finding her nitch working with Prudential Financial. Her husband, Lito continues to keep the city of New York safe as one of the brave men in blue.

Tito continues to make us proud as he remains focused towards his academic goals. It’s been a long time coming and still a long way to go.
Like Papi says in ignorance, “Aye Dios mio; pero cuando ese muchacho vas a terminar?”

Roxane is loving her role as “Nana”. She was recently rehired to work at Merck after being layed off for a few months.

And I, after observing the academic dedication of my son, received motivation to finish my Educational Leadership Certification next year at St. Joseph’s University. That will keep me busy for a while.

Many of you knew Pastor Hernan Cortes, Jr. He was our families beloved pastor for decades.

He was promoted into the prescence of His Savior last Sunday (Oct 25).

He preached Papa Gume's, Mama Con's, and Titi Marta's funeral. He also sang at these. He is also the man God used to lead all three of these to the Lord.

He was the greatest pastor I ever me and a true man of God. He was one of my biggest inspiration and influence in ministry.

The Mayor of their town announced yesterday that they will rename the (major) street that the church and school are on from Avenida Comerio to Avenida Hernan Cortes, Jr.

Pray for the church and his family as they deal with this great loss.

Mexico 2009

Wednesday we're off to Mexico for our annual Labor Day mission trip. Our church has been going to Mexico City for the past 20 years. More details from past trips here, here and here. This year will be the first time we go to serve in Oaxaca.

Oaxaca (pronounced Wa-Ha-Ka) is a little southeast of Mexico City. We'll be working with the same Mexican ministry, Armonia. We'll be there for 6 days and like in years past, we will be holding medical and eye clinics handing out hundreds of eyeglasses. We will also be doing some construction.

Please pray for traveling mercies along with a prayer for the safety of our health (does that make sense?). Oaxaca is the city of the first death in the 2009 Swine Flu Outbreak.

I'm told the place we're staying will have Internet so being the Techno Dweeb that I am, I will be blogging the trip from my phone and Netbook. Check back here for updates. For my Facebook community, I'll try to double post, but this will be the primary place to check.

I saw all those commercials offering a $1,500 rebate, “if you act now”, but I knew I wouldn’t qualify. I heard about the government’s Cash for Clunker program but I was skeptical. My parents told me about the Philco Ford’s Z-Plan discount if an employee (or their family member) buys a new car but I doubted. Well, not anymore. Today I drove home my very first brand new 2009 Ford Focus for almost 40% off the dealer price. After taking into account the gas savings and the maintenance & repair cost (I was driving a 1996 Dodge pick-up), the cost for me will be less than many people pay for a cell phone bill. In the words of Andre Crouch, “I didn’t think it could be, ‘til it happened to me”.
Bottom line – Thank God, from whom ALL blessings flow.

Church Softball Championship Game

Last night, our church softball team was in the finals. Though we didn't win, 20-19, (second place) We had a GREAT time. I don't play as much anymore. (trouble with my old knees). But coaching my son along the rest of the men, really brings my life full circle. I always coached both boys in sports as they were growing up. I can tell you that I am reaping the benefits of that time now.
